Pop styles of the rich and famous: Using Estill to create your unique pop sound

Kelly Burge EMCI and Ron Long EMT

How do you use Estill to achieve a pop sound that is controlled, current, and healthy?

This is a workshop for anyone who has taken the Estill level one workshop. (Level One Estill is required) We will be exploring Estill approaches to tone, texture, high notes, riffing and belting that are necessary for a convincing pop sound. We will also be exploring the use of a diagnostic tool, “pop check” to help ascertain what is happening in a pop song, so that we can better produce those sounds as vocalists.

This two-day long course is an extension of Estill figures, with an emphasis on small-group coaching and master class open coaching.

We don’t want to create “cookie cutter” pop styles, but rather, we will offer you an expanded “menu” of sounds so that you can shape your voice, your sound, in your way.

We ask that you prepare two selections before the workshop:

1.      The first verse and chorus of “Feel my love” originally written and performed by Bob Dylan, but covered by dozens of other pop singers in a variety of ways.  Here’s Bob Dylan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdWto-AUM3Q

Here’s Adele: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0put0_a--Ng

The song has been covered by so many people that you should have no trouble finding a recording of it in a key that is comfortable for your voice.

2. Please have a 32 bar selection from a song of your choosing to work on in our break-out sessions, or in open coaching. We will use this song to explore new options of artistry as you experiment and explore the potential of your voice.
