In this festive Estill workshop you will learn how to produce Sob from scratch. Participants are also encouraged to bring along either their favourite 1940’s jazzy Christmas classic or a Christmas song in classical style so that we can apply this skill straight away.

Sob quality is the tool of sadness and soulfulness. We hear it in crooning, jazz, blues, and in the quietest classical singing, too. Sob adds depth and warmth to your singing, and because it is so gentle on the muscles inside the larynx it is useful if you are recovering from vocal problems. This workshop is also a brilliant starting point for all musical theatre singers wanting to master the transition from contemporary to legit style. The session includes in-depth information, practical group exercises and some individual coaching. If you want to sing a Christmas song please be prepared with a backing track or be ready to sing a cappella.

Examples of crooning include, but are not limited to:

  • White Christmas (Frank Sinatra)
  • The Christmas Song (Nat King Cole)
  • Santa Baby (Eartha Kitt)
  • Silver Bells (Doris Day)

Classical style could be:

  • O Holy Night
  • O Tannenbaum
  • Once in Royal David’s City
  • In the Bleak Midwinter

This course is aimed at anyone who wants to learn more about how the voice works, singers of all genres and all speakers (e.g. actors, teachers, vicars, etc.), voice teachers, choral directors and speech and language therapists.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have:

  • had an anatomical overview of the larynx
  • reviewed False Vocal Fold control and Thyroid Cartilage control
  • reviewed Larynx control and Anchoring
  • started work on the Estill figure for Sob
  • applied this skill in singing and speaking

Cost

Full price £45 (Early bird: £35 by 5 December 2020)
