Conventions & Certification with Mary McDonald Klimkek
Not too long ago I was on duty in the Estill Voice Training Booth at the National Association of Teachers of Singing Convention in Chicago. Typically, exhibiting is not one of my favorite things; however, I had the best time EVER! I was very pleasantly surprised.
Some cause for enjoyment came from the wonderful members of EVI teaching community who were at the NATS Convention and dropped by from time to time to say hello.
Many of their faces can be seen in the photo from the North American Summit following the NATS Convention posted on our Estill Facebook page. (Go “like” us now, and “like” all the beautiful people at the European Estill Summit, too!) Such a treat to be in Chicago and close to CMT-C Rachel Page – who helped out with booth duties - and local CMTs, Corinne Ness and LorianStein-Schwaber.
More delight ensued from voice teachers dropping by to take advantage of the daily Make & Move Larynx giveaways. For several this was a repeat performance from conventions past. Fun to be a destination at the end of their bee-line through the exhibit hall! Others dropped by to order their yearly batch of Make & Moves for their studio and pedagogy class students at the special discount rate. Especially nice to see them!
Although I have no facts to back me up, my impression was that very few people stopped to ask who and what we are from the I’ve-never-heard-of-Estill-Voice-Training perspective. Almost everyone approached with an “Oh, you are Estill!”, moving on to, “A friend of mine just did one of your courses and hasn’t stopped enthusing about it since. Please tell me more!”
Perhaps it was exactly this enthusiast who hung out at the booth on several occasions and literally stole the show – I didn’t need to say a thing! So much fun to see the transformative power of Estill Voice Training generating buzz and excitement in our little patch of the exhibit hall. So much more effective for new-comers to hear how valuable Estill Voice Training is from someone who isn’t even in our certification program - although I should probably fact-check that!
I was not particularly surprised to field detailed questions from convention attendees concerning certification in Estill Voice Training. “Certification” is definitely trending out there. Make & Moves require an hour of a person’s time. Our Certification Program requires months and years and then more years. Those who read my articles know how deeply convinced I am that the longer you work with EVT, the richer the experience becomes. Apparently, I am not the only one!
There are currently over 100 people signed up in our Certification Center and working towards a Certificate of Figure Proficiency (CFP). There are 350 dedicated individuals who have already earned their CFPs. We have an additional 250 Certified Master Teachers and 35 Certified Course Instructors who are active within our Estill Voice Training teaching community. And when call ourselves Estill Voice International, we mean it. " 40,000 people at Jamboree in the Hills waited, but I didn’t step on stage until I finished my Estill Voice Exercises I sing daily with my IPod. After my rousing vocal performance, those 40,000 people transformed into 40,000 cheering fans!"
