The tongue is a rogue - or it can be when it gets involved in things other than diction and resonance. It can be the cause of many vocal problems, including loss of range, pushing the voice, constriction, vocal fatigue, unclear diction and lack of colour.

In this workshop you will become aware of different tongue positions, learn to control different parts of the tongue independently, release tension and put strategies in place for a tongue that helps your singing and speaking rather than hindering it.

The session includes in depth information, practical group exercises and some individual coaching. Please have a mirror or phone to hand so you can watch your tongue in some of the exercises.

This course is aimed at anyone who wants to learn more about how the voice works, singers of all genres and all speakers (e.g. actors, teachers, vicars, etc.), voice teachers, choral directors and speech and language therapists.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have:

  • had an anatomical overview of the tongue and larynx
  • explored high, mid- and low tongue positions
  • begun conscious training in the Estill figure for tongue
  • discovered the acoustic effects of different tongue positions
  • released tension in the tongue root
  • sung and spoken with different tongue positions
