Description

Presented for La Voix Dynamique in English (with French translation) by : Anne-Marie Speed, International Voice, Singing and Accent Coach and Tim Richards – Singer and Singing Teacher, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

OVERVIEW

Estill Voice Training has completely revolutionised musical theatre training in the UK and many will recognise its enormous contribution in clarifying the technical descriptions and teaching of styles that underpin contemporary musical theatre, especially in the understanding of Belt.

What is not so widely appreciated is the clarity it brings to technical training as well as answers to many common vocal problems in the classical and operatic voice. There are many renowned teachers who integrate key elements of Estill Voice Training into their own methodologies and who publicly acknowledge the value Estill brings to their teaching, perhaps the most notable of these being Janice Chapman.

Jo Estill started as a classical and opera singer of some note before becoming one of the greatest voice teachers and researchers of the 20th century. She always retained a deep love for the classical voice and repertoire and referenced it often in her writing.

This workshop will look at the distinct differences and advantages that Estill can bring to the training and ongoing development of the classical voice, male and female.

The day will include:

  • Common classical problems identified
  • An alternative approach to teaching breathing and support
  • Integrating traditional pedagogy with Estill Voice Training
  • The Passaggio – what is happening and how to work through it (or ‘them’!)
  • Extending the range, both low and high
  • Singing high and soft – what is really stopping you.
  • Q&As
