WHAT IS EVT®?

Estill Voice Training® (EVT) uses science to teach voice. It was developed by Jo Estill in the 1970s, established in the 1980s, and has since been used by artists and performers, voice instructors and clinicians, and voice researchers worldwide.

Anyone who uses their voice professionally or for personal enjoyment can benefit from EVT®. This includes singers, actors and voice-actors, public speakers, broadcasters, voice teachers, choir directors, speech therapists, and more.

EVT® differs from other vocal techniques in that it offers a model for healthy voice production without aesthetic bias.  EVT® focuses on isolating and controlling individual anatomical structures within the voice production system. This allows singers & speakers to create a wider range of vocal sounds that can be used for any situation, character, style of music, including different vibrato speeds, speech-like sounds, and even overtone singing.

Speech Language therapists also describe the exercises as valuable to voice therapy, in both professional and non-professional voice use, offering an approach for therapeutic intervention.

EVT® has been used and promoted by many well-known performers and vocal coaches around the globe. Here is just a short list of some famous people who have used or talked about EVT® and/or certified Estill Voice trainers:

The amount of time it takes to see results from EVT® can vary depending on the individual’s starting level of vocal ability and the amount of practice they put in. However, some students report seeing improvement in their vocal abilities after just a few sessions or on the first day of a course.

EVT® provides clients with options for vocal choices and does not limit the amount of sounds one can make. It is designed to help singers and speakers become more confident in vocal choices and develop control and precision. It does not necessarily change their natural voice or singing style, but they have to option to change more easily if they want to. It provides tools and techniques to expand and enhance the vocal abilities they already have along with offering road maps to new vocal sounds.

There are no specific prerequisites or requirements for taking EVT®. If you are new to voice training, visit www.estillvoice.com/beginner. If you’ve had voice training before, but you are new to EVT®, visit www.estillvoice.com/intermediate. We highly recommend everyone starting out with Foundations of EVT® in our Online Academy or an Intro Workshop with a certified Trainer if unsure about beginning with Level 1.

To become a certified Estill Voice trainer, first you must attend a EVT course. These courses are available worldwide in various formats. Visit www.estillvoice.com/get-certified to learn more about certification.

We offer two types of Level 1 courses: a “standard” Level 1 course and a Hybrid Level 1 course. The main difference between the two is the format of delivery.

A “standard” Level 1 course is delivered live, in real time, on location or online over the course of 3 consecutive days (some instructors offer weekly sessions or over a semester as well). The course is led by a certified EMCI who will guide you through the course material and provide hands-on instruction. This type of course is ideal for those who prefer a structured, immersive learning experience and have the time and resources to attend an in-person/live-online training (no recordings, you need to be available at that exact date/time).

A Hybrid Level 1 course contains the same curriculum as a standard Level 1, but combines a self-directed learner course, Foundations of EVT® , in the Online Academy with a shorter live on location/online instructor led Level 1 Figures for Voice.  This format allows participants to work through introductory material and the theory behind the EVT Model before they attend the instructor led component. Foundations of EVT does not expire and participants only have to purchase it and complete it once to be eligible to register for any Hybrid Level 1.  The instructor led component is shorter in a Hybrid Level 1 than the standard version but equally focusses on exercises and application of the model. This type of course is ideal for those who prefer a more flexible learning experience, with the ability to work through the material on their own time.

Both courses cover the same material and are designed to give you a foundational understanding of the Estill Voice Model, including the anatomy and physiology of the voice, vocal function, and the Estill Figures for Voice.

Yes. Even though Foundations of EVT® is the first module of a Hybrid Level 1 Course, they are sold separately. Once purchase is complete in the Online Academy, participants may register for any Hybrid Level 1 course found on on our website.

Once you have completed a course, your Certificate of Attendance will be sent to you via email within two weeks. If for any reason you have not received your certificate after two weeks, please contact us at info@estillvoice.com and we will look into the matter for you.

If you have only completed the second module of a Hybrid Level 1 course, you will need to complete Foundations of EVT® to get your Certificate of Attendance.

The cost of an EVT® course/workshop can vary depending on the location, instructor, and level of training. If you are interested in an upcoming course, we suggest you reach out to the instructor to find out if they offer payment options or discounts. You can find their contact information in the course description.

At this time, it is not possible to pay for the Resources Fee for EVT® courses over time. Payment for EVT® courses is typically due in full at the time of registration or prior to the start of the course. However, some EVT® instructors may offer payment plans or financing options for their individual courses/workshops, so it may be worth reaching out to the instructor directly to inquire about any available options. If you have any further questions or concerns about payment for EVT® courses, please don’t hesitate to reach out to info@estillvoice.com.

The Estill Resources Fee covers administrative support from EVI, a Certificate of Attendance and all supporting materials, handouts, and presentations for the course including, but not limited to, an updated PDF version of the Level 1 & 2 Workbooks.  All who register for an Estill Voice Training Level 1 & 2 Course must pay this fee.

Our Level 1 and Level 2 workbooks are specifically designed to be used in conjunction with our EVT® courses and are only available to those who are currently taking courses.

It is important to find a certified Estill Voice trainer who is qualified to teach the specific level of training you are interested in. If you are looking for a trainer to have private lessons, visit www.estillvoice.com/trainers.
