Mars Hill College
Mars Hill College has enjoyed a 23-year relationship with Estill Voice Training™ founder, Jo Estill, as a direct result of her pioneering work in voice science. What began as an interest in incorporating Estill's Figures for Voice into the music curriculum of the institution, has steadily grown into a significant educational partnership down through the years with Jo Estill and her business partners.
Today, Mars Hill College voice and musical theatre majors engage in a four-year course of study in EVT Levels I and II. The students learn each of the voice qualities in a two-year sequence of Singer-on Stage performance classes and complete their study of Estill Voice Training™ in a senior vocal pedagogy seminar that has as its focus the identification and remediation of the twenty-one common problems.
Recently, through a generous matching grant from Estill Voice International, the Department of Music at Mars Hill College has been able to equip each of its Voice Lab computers with Estill Voiceprint Plus™s and accompanying instruction manuals. In addition, the grant has made it possible to provide the voice faculty with the same interactive software and resource materials.
"I went to college for musical theater without ever taking voice lessons. I found the lessons made singing more difficult and limiting. Many teachers only allowed me to sing in an opera state even though I wanted to sing pop. I lost confidence in my voice and singing was less than fun. Estill made sense to me. It's like I've traded my 12 crayon box for a 120 crayon box. I have so many options. Singing is fun again and I gain confidence every time I get up to do it. Studying Estill and practicing Estill is fun too. I love sharing it with students who really want to learn because it's so rewarding to watch them get it. Estill is the only voice training method I use and recommend to others because it is the only one that truly works. It allows the singer to practice healthy vocal techniques, but still keep their artistic style in tact."
