This course will run over the course of several months (February 27 and 28; March 27 and 28; April 17 and 18), 2010 and is open to anyone interested in learning more about the voice – singers, speakers, teachers, therapists, choral conductors. Participants will be introduced to the concepts and exercises of Estill Voice Training (also known as Estill Voicecraft), an innovative, informative and empowering approach that creates a pathway to exciting vocal discoveries. Free from aesthetic bias, the Figures (exercises) of Level One reveal the basic mechanics of how the voice works. Each Figure creates a specific vocal sound effect, adds a particular "ingredient" to our vocal "recipe". In Level One, we explore the range of effects available and acquire valuable insights regarding vocal health, stamina and power. Each day will include interactive lectures as well as opportunities for group and individual practice. Open Coaching sessions offer the chance to see how Figures can be used to break down the barriers standing between you and your vocal goals. In Level Two, we explore how EVT’s Figures can be used to mix the "recipes" for 6 voice qualities: Speech, Falsetto, Sob, Twang, Opera, and Belting. |

"Everyone has a beautiful voice. You just have to know how to use it," says singer & scientist Jo Estill. Her system, Estill Voice Training™ (EVT), simplifies the learning process by breaking the voice down into its working parts – the actual structures that make the voice work. Using Estill’s Figures for Voice™, students learn to control each structure independently and then combine the structures to create different voice qualities. This course is available for anyone who would like to improve their singing or speaking voice – vocal instructors, drama instructors, Speech-Language Pathologists and other vocal health professionals. The skills developed in Level One will add strength, clarity and stamina to your voice! Throughout the course, participants will apply their new skills to all styles of speaking and singing in small group practice sessions. Participants will learn the same Estill Voice Training tools that are used daily on stages from the Met to Broadway to Nashville to Madison Square Garden! |

During open coaching sessions, singers may present pieces of their own choosing – ideally with problems to be solved. The weekend ends with a panel discussion on topics of student interest. With the structural control gained through Figures for Voice Control, students learn to "mix" each of the arbitrary voice quality "recipes." The advantages, limitations, and risks of each quality will be discussed, as well as appropriate application to repertoire. Once again, there will be a focus on production in the context of vocal health. During open coaching sessions, singers may present pieces of their own choosing, focusing on mastering the elements of a new quality or exploring the expressive boundaries of using multiple qualities in a single selection. Prerequisite: Certificate of Attendance from a Level One Course in Estill Voice Training. Fees:
There will likely be an additional fee for ASHA CEUs. Visit the course link at www.NECmusic.edu to learn more and to register. |

"Why am I an Estill Voice Training practitioner? Obviously, I respect the quality of Jo Estill's research. She has produced a systematic approach to voice training that I have used successfully for the past twenty-two years in my work with undergraduate singers. It is one thing for Jo Estill to have been named one of the most significant voice scientists in the world today. She joins the ranks of many such gifted scientists. However, it is quite another thing to have fine tuned her research in such a way as to offer singers a disciplined approach that meets the demands of the profession today; namely, the ability to sing a variety of voice qualities with confidence, endurance, and artistic sensitivity. My colleagues and I think so highly of Jo Estill's work that we have developed a four-year undergraduate voice curriculum using her published materials. There is no greater "testimony" as to the trust we have in this approach to the training of the singing voice than to offer it to the next generation as a foundation for their professional careers."
