This course can be attended by singers of all kinds of styles, choral conductors, actors, drama coaches, speech pathologists, vocal coaches and professional speakers. Jo Estill developed a system where you can learn to use your voice in a safe and healthy way, improve your technique, acquire possibilities you never imagined to reach. We work in plenum and practice groups to analyse all sounds of the voice, and see how the voice works anatomically and acoustically, based on scientific research. We watch video’s and demonstrations to learn all the basic figures of Level One. In the Open Sessions we can implement our new knowledge immediately.

In Level Two, the sound effect "ingredients" discovered in Level One are mixed into "recipes" to produce voice qualities such as opera, belting, sob (a "crooning" quality), falsetto (as in the vibrato-less sound of some early music), twang (as in a role like Oklahoma's Ado Annie), and speech. This course begins with a Level One review and then moves through discussion, training, and applications for each of the six voice qualities described about. The advantages, limitations, and risks of each quality will be discussed, as well as appropriate application to repertoire. Course days provide a variety of learning environments: classroom presentations, practice sessions, and open coaching sessions, during which students may present pieces of their own choosing--ideally with problems to be solved. The principles of Estill Voice Training apply to beginning and advanced singers, voice teachers, voice therapists, choral conductors, and actors. Estill Voice Training promotes both vocal versatility and vocal health. Prerequisite: Level One Attendance Certificate. Registration will be processed on-line at New England Conservatory's website: www.necmusic.edu/ce/estill. The registration process links appear below the course description. This is a practical course where you experience creating the six voice qualities associated with Estill Voice Training: speech, falsetto, sob, twang, opera and belt. Discussion focuses on how to mix these qualities safely and how to apply them artistically in different genres. Presentations will be combined with small group practice sessions and master classes. As well as teachers and students of performance, this course will also be of interest to speech and language therapists with voice clients. Level Two is only for those who have already completed Level One. |

"As a teacher of singing, I have dreamed about a common language for singers, a technical perspective that acknowledges the athletic nature of what we do and the effort that is clearly a part of the package, and a collaborative environment that builds up both teachers and students. I feel that, in order to build a solid program foundation, both teachers and students alike must feel secure in admitting any lack of clarity so that they can open up to continual learning. Treating voice training as an ongoing science, in which we are all helping to flesh out details makes everyone partners in the process, and doesn't invalidate and alienate as some approaches do. In fact, this approach truly invites a team approach to learning."
