This course can be attended by singers of all kinds of styles, choral conductors, actors, drama coaches, speech pathologists, vocal coaches and professional speakers. Jo Estill developed a system where you can learn to use your voice in a safe and healthy way, improve your technique, acquire possibilities you never imagined to reach.

We work in plenum and practice groups to analyse all sounds of the voice, and see how the voice works anatomically and acoustically, based on scientific research. We watch video’s and demonstrations to learn all the basic figures of Level One. In the Open Sessions we can implement our new knowledge immediately.

Overview: This day follows on from previous Breathing and Support workshops in response to many requests for further information on the physiology of breathing when performing, acting and singing. The teaching of ‘support’ is still an area fraught with misunderstanding and misinformation. The key to effective teaching of this crucial area of vocal technique is clear understanding of the physiological basis for the need to ‘support’, what is being supported and the most efficient ways to achieve this. Building on information given on earlier courses, we will identify which muscles are needed to support the voice by clarifying the relationship between breath and vocalisation. By using ultrasound techniques, we will also identify those muscles which undermine vocal support and those which are essential to sustained, vigorous voice use, in speaking or singing. Using real time ultrasound, we will demonstrate which muscles tend to be overactive, overwhelming those which are necessary to efficient vocal function. The day will conclude with a short master class, demonstrating the application of the day’s principles in the teaching studio.

The day will include:

Defining ‘support’ physiologically

Use of ultrasound to identify key support muscles

Demonstration of teaching techniques

Myths and misinformation – disentangling fact from fiction

Audio and video examples

Short master class

Suitable for: For people both new and familiar with the Model, looking for clarification and consolidation; singers and actors; teachers of voice and singing; students and professionals.

Estill Voice Training Course  Level I & II
Figures for Voice Control & Figure Combinations for Six Voice Qualities

In Level I,  Figures for Voice Control,  you learn the 13 anatomical elements that Jo Estill observed, and their relationship to the sound and power of your voice. You learn to voluntarily and independently control these elements and their practical application for such things as:

•  Four ways to make your voice more powerful without strain
•  How to sing higher more easily
•  How the cricoid cartilage helps you belt with no strain and greater range
•  Three ways to start your sound and how they influence your tone.
•  How the false folds help protect your voice from hoarseness
•  How the adam's apple (thyroid cartilage) can help you make a clearer tone
•  Three things that will make your voice sound deeper and richer
•  How to smooth out your break or “passagio”

Level II , Figure Combinations for Six Voice Qualities
, teaches you to combine the above anatomical elements to create six voice qualities and explores their use in Folk Music, Jazz, Pop, Early Music,  Musical Theater Opera, country music, gospel, Rhythm & Blues , Ethnic and Choral singing.  Understanding how the figures effect your sound  and power also allows you greater breadth of dynamic expression, and character development.

The workshop involves Powerpoint presentations, endoscopic videos, anatomical models and slides. There are application activities and small group practices. There is a chance for individual attention in a master class format at the end of the instruction day.   The workbooks provide a complete summary of the Estill Vocal Training model. You will also learn how to read a spectrogram and how it can be used to provide you with continuing feedback on how well you are executing the Voice Qualities.

This course concentrates on the singing voice, valuable to singers, voice teachers and choir directors, but is applicable for actors, speech pathologists, and anyone interested in minimizing vocal strain and maximizing projection.

The venue, La Perla del Mar, is located one block from the beach on the California Central Coast. Come early or stay late to enjoy the beaches, wineries and Mission San Luis Obispo.

Overview: This is the eighth year that we are offering this popular and challenging course. Participants need to have completed two Complete 5 Day Courses in order to sign up for this course. Over three days, we focus on the complex Figure & Voice Quality combinations that make up the professional performers’ artistic demands and which are found across genres; musical theatre, classical, rock and pop. Participants will therefore need a high level of independent control and understanding of both the Figures and Voice Qualities. We will address, among other subjects, the extension of qualities beyond their natural range, common quality combinations in different genres (including musical theatre and opera) as well as a special course dedicated to diction.

Suitable for:  Only those who have completed two or more Complete 5 Day Courses

Book through www.thevoiceexplained.com.

"I went to college for musical theater without ever taking voice lessons. I found the lessons made singing more difficult and limiting. Many teachers only allowed me to sing in an opera state even though I wanted to sing pop. I lost confidence in my voice and singing was less than fun. Estill made sense to me. It's like I've traded my 12 crayon box for a 120 crayon box. I have so many options. Singing is fun again and I gain confidence every time I get up to do it. Studying Estill and practicing Estill is fun too. I love sharing it with students who really want to learn because it's so rewarding to watch them get it. Estill is the only voice training method I use and recommend to others because it is the only one that truly works. It allows the singer to practice healthy vocal techniques, but still keep their artistic style in tact."
