What is Estill Voice Training?

  • Can I do “figures” with my voice like skaters do at the Olympics?
  • What is the relationship between Anchoring and Support?
  • Is “healthy belting” close to “healthy opera?”>
  • How can I cross-over to produce different speaking & singing styles?
  • How can I increase my pitch range safely?

Bring a working song or monologue to experiment with the power of vocal color.

Estill Voice Training Level I & II
Figures for Voice Control & Figure Combinations for Six Voice Qualities

In Level I,  Figures for Voice Control,  you learn the 13 anatomical elements that Jo Estill observed, and their relationship to the sound and power of your voice. You learn to voluntarily and independently control these elements and their practical application for such things as:

•  Four ways to make your voice more powerful without strain
•  How to sing higher more easily
•  How the cricoid cartilage helps you belt with no strain and greater range
•  Three ways to start your sound and how they influence your tone.
•  How the false folds help protect your voice from hoarseness
•  How the adam's apple (thyroid cartilage) can help you make a clearer tone
•  Three things that will make your voice sound deeper and richer
•  How to smooth out your break or “passagio”

Level II , Figure Combinations for Six Voice Qualities, teaches you to combine the thirteen anatomical elements to create six voice qualities and explores their use in Folk Music, Jazz, Pop, Early Music,  Musical Theater Opera, country music, gospel, Rhythm & Blues , Ethnic and Choral singing.  Understanding how the figures effect your sound  and power also allows you greater breadth of dynamic expression, and character development.

The workshop involves Powerpoint presentations, endoscopic videos, anatomical models and slides. There are application activities and small group practices. There is a chance for individual attention in a master class format at the end of the instruction day.   The workbooks provide a complete summary of the Estill Vocal Training model. You will also learn how to read a spectrogram and how it can be used to provide you with continuing feedback on how well you are executing the Voice Qualities.

This course concentrates on the singing voice, valuable to singers, voice teachers and choir directors, but is applicable for actors, speech pathologists, and anyone interested in minimizing vocal strain and maximizing projection.

This course is for anyone who would like to improve their singing or speaking voice—singers, actors, vocal coaches, drama instructors, Speech-Language Pathologists and other vocal health professionals.  The Level One & Two courses will be taught in two consecutive weekends: Level One - October 28 - 20.  Level Two- November 5-6.

Level One: Figures for Voice™ teaches the tools of the craft to add strength, clarity and stamina to your voice! Participants will use EVT’s innovative Figures for Voice™ to learn control of the vocal structures that influence voice quality. Each Figure employs exercises that will give you new vocal options for all styles speaking and singing. Figure Combinations for Six Voice Qualities™ offers a clear understanding of the voice’s limitless possibilities, along with how to keep it vibrant and healthy. Estill Voice Training - Level II - Figure Combinations for Six Voice Qualities

In Level I you learn to control each of 13 different anatomical structures that effect the sound and power of your voice. Knowing  how to voluntarily adjust these 13 elements, allows you to combine them in different combinations or “Recipes”. Level II works with six voice qualities and explores their use in Folk Music, Jazz, Pop, Early Music,  Musical Theater Opera, country music, gospel, Rhythm & Blues , Ethnic and Choral singing.

You will also learn how to read a spectragram and how it can be used to provide you with continuing feedback on how well you are executing the Voice Qualities.

Level I is a prerequisite for this course.

The course is aimed mainly for the singer, but is a valuable workshop for actors, speech pathologists and anyone who wants to gain maintain vocal health, and speak with confidence and expressive effectiveness.

"I wanted to write and thank you for such a great weekend and such a fascinating course. I was enthralled by the entire concept and approach. You also really gave me something that I needed at that moment and I'm grateful. My season of marathon singing began last weekend and I had a chance to put what I had learned to some very practical use. And it worked beautifully. I'm finding all sorts of new places and colours and choices. And the public reaction was immediate to what I was doing! Yow!"
