Level One is for anyone interested in learning about the voice. This intense course begins with an overview, where we introduce the philosophy and science behind Estill Voice Training and Figures for Voice™ exercises. Presentations are combined with frequent small group practice sessions, supervised by fully-trained interns, where all participants experience creating and applying Figures for Voice™. In addition we run master class sessions where you can apply the exercises to your own performance. We cover how the system relates to different voice fields, from opera to musical theatre, from theatre voice to public speaking, and enable truly versatile vocal performers. As well as teachers and students of performance, this course will be of interest to speech and language therapists with voice clients.

The course will focus on repetition and more advanced exercises of Level One & Two and analysis of problems & solutions/Pedagogical issues. This course is open to anyone with an interest in learning about the voice, e.g. singers, voiceteachers, actors, choirleaders, clinical voice professionals etc. The course begins with an introduction to the Estill Voice Model with Compulsory Figures for Voice, and an overview of this course. We will work through all the basic Figures in Level One and end up with a short overview of the Six Voice Qualities of Level Two. We will practise together and individually in small groups, integrating new skills into singing and applying them to different genres of music. The days will alternate between classroom presentations, practice sessions in small groups and open sessions.

The Estill Model offers precise tools to assist teachers and performers in the training and ongoing development of the voice, whether speaking or singing. It uniquely identifies hose structures in the larynx responsible for producing the voice and those in the throat or vocal tract that control resonance or voice quality. The course is presented by Anne-Marie Speed, one of the most experienced teachers of the Estill Model internationally.
The Estill Model has revolutionised the teaching of voice, with its emphasis on the development of voluntary control of the muscles responsible for producing the voice. Through the practice of specific exercises known as ‘Compulsory Figures’, participants gain a conscious, practical and muscular control of the voice that is unique. This course is open to anyone who has already taken the Estill Level One course -- singers, voice teachers, actors, clinical voice professionals, etc. The course begins with an overview of the development of the Estill Voice Model and an overview of this course. We will then work through 6 voice qualities: speech, falsetto, sob, twang, belting and opera - by practicing individually and integrating them into singing and different genres of music. The days will alternate between lecture presentations, video research, audio examples, practice sessions and open sessions.

The Complete Estill Course
Estill Training is craft for singers, like fingering for the pianist.

Practice independent voice motor control. Understand advanced anatomy and how the voice physically and acoustically functions. Control the components that change voice quality through kinesthetic perception and muscle training.

Emphasis on aesthetic freedom and vocal safety across all styles and genres – from rock to opera, jazz to belting!

Level 1 – Compulsory Figures
In Level One, participants will accomplish an advanced understanding of vocal anatomy and the physiology of the larynx. The students will be able to increase their kinesthetic perception and maximize their control over their “reed”-instrument. The scientifically researched figures or muscle training exercises allow the voice user to individually monitor, control and adjust all researched muscular structures involved in sound production and therefore safely produce any style or genre specific voice quality.
Each participant will receive individual feedback and monitoring to ensure that all concepts are understood and applied correctly. From the start, the emphasis will be on singing and speaking, both individually and as a group to reinforce technical ideas and ensure correct training of muscle memory.

Level 2 – Figure Combinations
During Level Two, participants will analyze and develop mastery of 6 archetype vocal qualities including Speech, Falsetto, Twang (nasal and oral), Sob, Opera and Belting. Additionally, contemporary, classical, and music theatre voice qualities will be studied in order to create a better understanding of how the work can be applied on stage, in the studio and in rehearsals. The client will be supplied with a toolbox of muscular skills, anatomically correct vocabulary and the confidence that anyone can train the muscles of their voice in order to achieve any aesthetic goal.
Finally, students will be able to participate in a master class in order to apply the tools learnt in a group/performance environment. Singers may present pieces of their own choosing, ideally with problems to be solved. There is no pre-requisite nor audition for this course.
