This course provides an introduction to the Estill Voice Model and its philosophy. Students will learn how Figures for Voice Control lay the foundation for vocal mastery. Practice sessions in small groups allow students to develop proficiency in the Figures under the supervision of experienced instructors, one of whom is a practicing voice therapy clinician. Skills developed during this beginning experience with the Estill Model have direct application to the maintenance of vocal health. During open coaching sessions, singers may present pieces of their own choosing – ideally with problems to be solved. The weekend ends with a panel discussion on topics of student interest. This course is suitable for both beginning and advanced singers, voice teachers, voice therapists (ASHA CEUs will be offered), choral conductors, and actors. Prerequisites: None, aside from an interest in the voice.

This course begins with a review of the Level One Compulsory Figures for skill refinement, and then moves through discussion, training, and applications for each of the six voice qualities described above. With the structural control gained through Figures for Voice Control, students learn to "mix" each of the arbitrary voice quality "recipes." The advantages, limitations, and risks of each quality will be discussed, as well as appropriate application to repertoire. Once again, there will be a focus on production in the context of vocal health. During open coaching sessions, singers may present pieces of their own choosing, focusing on mastering the elements of a new quality or exploring the expressive boundaries of using multiple qualities in a single selection.  Prerequisite: Certificate of Attendance from a Level One Course in Estill Voice Training.

Fees:

  • 1CE credit: $525 per session

This course provides an introduction to the Estill Voice Model and its philosophy. In Level One, students learn about vocal physiology and use Figure exercises to produce different vocal sound effects. In Level Two, these sound effect "ingredients" are mixed into "recipes" to produce voice qualities such as opera, belting, sob (a "crooning" quality), falsetto (as in the vibrato-less sound of some early music), twang (as in a role like Oklahoma's Ado Annie), and speech. Course days provide a variety of learning environments: classroom presentations, practice sessions, and open coaching sessions, during which students may present pieces of their own choosing--ideally with problems to be solved. The principles of Estill Voice Training apply to beginning and advanced singers, voice teachers, voice therapists, choral conductors, and actors. Estill Voice Training promotes both vocal versatility and vocal health.

Registration will be processed on-line at New England Conservatory's website: http://necmusic.edu/ce/estill.   The on-line registration links are posted below the course description.

All participants will receive a course attendance certificate with instructional hours for professional development credits.

This Level One Course, produced with the support of the Ars Nova Singers, will take place over three days, but within the elapsed time frame of a 2 day course.  Participants should be prepared to complete a reading assignment prior to the course's start date to better allow us to cover all of the information in the Level One curriculum.

There will be breaks with snacks on Saturday and Sunday; participants will be on their own for lunches and dinner.  Each day will be divided between lectures, demonstrations, and group learning activities, with small group break-out sessions for one-on-one coaching in Figures for Voice.  Although choral applications will be featured, opportunities will be created for discussion and exploration in the domains of solo performance, voice teaching, and voice therapy, as participant interests dictate.

It is expected that there will be both newcomers to Estill Voice Training and Reviewers.  Reviewers should deduct the $33 materials fee that is included in the Course Fee if they already own a Level One Workbook.

Payment should be made directly to Mary McDonald Klimek.  A registration form will appear here shortly.

"I went to college for musical theater without ever taking voice lessons. I found the lessons made singing more difficult and limiting. Many teachers only allowed me to sing in an opera state even though I wanted to sing pop. I lost confidence in my voice and singing was less than fun. Estill made sense to me. It's like I've traded my 12 crayon box for a 120 crayon box. I have so many options. Singing is fun again and I gain confidence every time I get up to do it. Studying Estill and practicing Estill is fun too. I love sharing it with students who really want to learn because it's so rewarding to watch them get it. Estill is the only voice training method I use and recommend to others because it is the only one that truly works. It allows the singer to practice healthy vocal techniques, but still keep their artistic style in tact."
