Estill Voice Training Course  Level I
Compulsory Figures for Voice Control

In Level I,  Figures for Voice Control,  you learn about independent control of multiple structures in and around the larynx and their relationships to the sound and power of your voice. You learn their practical application in singing and speaking for:

•  ways to make your voice more powerful without strain
•  ease in singing high notes (softly or loudly)
•  finding how the cricoid cartilage helps you belt with no strain and greater range
•  three ways to start your sound and how each way can influence your tone
•  seeing how retracting the false folds can fix many voice problems that are caused by the body's natural response to work

•  adding “brightness” and “vitality” to your sound
•  creating a "deeper" and "richer" voice

Practice sessions and master classes will provide hands-on experience of applying compulsory figures to spoken and sung repertoire.  An overview of Level II will introduce you to  figure combinations for six voice qualities that include opera and belting.

THE COURSE IS FULL AND OPEN ONLY TO THEATRE STUDENTS AND FACULTY AT VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY.

•   Problem areas and solutions

•   Belting over the break

•   Improving the Belting aesthetic (aka making it sound nice…)

•   Audio and video examples

•   Live demonstrations from West End singers

•   Short master class

"Why am I an Estill Voice Training practitioner? Obviously, I respect the quality of Jo Estill's research. She has produced a systematic approach to voice training that I have used successfully for the past twenty-two years in my work with undergraduate singers. It is one thing for Jo Estill to have been named one of the most significant voice scientists in the world today. She joins the ranks of many such gifted scientists. However, it is quite another thing to have fine tuned her research in such a way as to offer singers a disciplined approach that meets the demands of the profession today; namely, the ability to sing a variety of voice qualities with confidence, endurance, and artistic sensitivity. My colleagues and I think so highly of Jo Estill's work that we have developed a four-year undergraduate voice curriculum using her published materials. There is no greater "testimony" as to the trust we have in this approach to the training of the singing voice than to offer it to the next generation as a foundation for their professional careers."
