Please note that Ms. Speed will be presenting this course in collaboration with Ed Blake, Specialist Physiotherapist. This day follows on from previous Breathing and Support workshops in response to many requests for further information on the physiology of breathing when singing. It is open to all levels, but will be of especial interest to those who have attended previous Breathing & Support workshops. The teaching of ‘support’ is still an area fraught with misunderstanding and misinformation. The key to effective teaching of this crucial area of vocal technique is clear understanding of the physiological basis for the need to ‘support’, what is being supported and the most efficient ways to achieve this. Building on information given on earlier courses, we will identify which muscles are needed to support the voice by clarifying the relationship between breath and vocalisation. By using ultrasound techniques, we will also identify those muscles which undermine vocal support and those which are essential to sustained, vigorous voice use, in speaking or singing. Using real time ultrasound, we will demonstrate which muscles tend to be overactive, overwhelming those which are necessary to efficient vocal function. The day will conclude with a short masterclass, demonstrating the application of the day’s principles in the teaching studio. The day will include:

While application of the Estill Voice Model to singing and singing teaching is well established, there is still confusion among many voice teachers as to how the Model is relevant to the teaching and training of actors. The Estill Model provides direct solutions to many of the issues that are unique to the speaking voice and the craft of acting, both students and professionals. As many voice teachers find themselves working in different genres and media, including theatre and film, the Estill Model gives immediate, practical solutions to moving from one genre to another. This day will offer practical exercises, explanations and support in working with students and professionals in stage , film and theatre. Anne-Marie has pioneered the use of the Estill Model in the teaching of speaking here in the UK and has innovated many exercises in adapting the Model to spoken voice. The day will include:

Suitable for all styles of performance. Early Bird fee of £65 applies if paid and booked before 01/01/09; Student Rate of £40 if nominated by teacher. This is the sixth year that we are offering this popular and challenging course. Participants need to have completed two Complete 5 Day Courses in order to sign up for this course. Over three days, we focus on the complex Figure & Voice Quality combinations that are part and parcel of the professional performers’ artillery and which are found across genres; musical theatre, classical, rock and pop. Participants will therefore need a high level of independent control and understanding of both the Figures and Voice Qualities. We will address, among other subjects, the extension of qualities beyond their natural range, common quality combinations in different genres (including musical theatre and opera) as well as a special course dedicated to diction. The Complete Estill CourseThis complete course in Estill Voice Training is open to voice teachers, singers and speakers as well as singer/songwriters, music producers, dancers and all other voice users. Estill is craft for singers, like fingering for the pianist, the gym for athletes, ballet for dancers or grammar for language. Learn basic anatomy, how the voice physically functions and how to control the components that change voice quality through kinesthetic perception and muscle training. Emphasis on aesthetic freedom and vocal safety across all styles and genres – from rock to opera, jazz to belting! Level 1In Level One, participants will accomplish a basic understanding of vocal anatomy and the physiology of the larynx. The students will be able to increase their kinesthetic perception and maximize their control over their “reed”-instrument. The scientifically researched figures or muscle training exercises allow the voice user to individually monitor, control and adjust all researched muscular structures involved in sound production and therefore safely produce any style or genre specific voice quality. Each participant will receive individual feedback and monitoring to ensure that all concepts are understood and applied correctly. From the start, the emphasis will be on singing and speaking, both individually and as a group to reinforce technical ideas and ensure correct training of muscle memory. Level 2During Level Two, participants will develop mastery of 6 archetype vocal qualities including Speech, Falsetto, Twang (nasal and oral), Sob, Opera and Belting. Additionally, contemporary, classical, and music theatre voice qualities will be studied in order to create a better understanding of how the work can be applied on stage, in the studio and in rehearsals. The client will be supplied with a toolbox of muscular skills, anatomically correct vocabulary and the confidence that anyone can train the muscles of their voice in order to achieve any aesthetic goal. Finally, students will be able to participate in a master class in order to apply the tools learnt in a group/performance environment. Singers may present pieces of their own choosing, ideally with problems to be solved. There is no pre-requisite nor audition for this course. "BE (Before Estill) I used to ask my various teachers why I couldn't do certain things and never got a straight or useful answer. The first Estill workshop I attended in Australia was a revelation for me. I grieved for the voice I should have had for at least 12 months. .However, my main purpose now, is to pass on this wonderful work to as many people as I can. I am positive that Estill has answers!"
