Estill Voice Training Course  Level I & II
Figures for Voice Control & Figure Combinations for Six Voice Qualities

In Level I,  Figures for Voice Control,  you learn the 13 anatomical elements that Jo Estill observed, and their relationship to the sound and power of your voice. You learn to voluntarily and independently control these elements and their practical application for such things as:

•  Four ways to make your voice more powerful without strain
•  How to sing higher more easily
•  How the cricoid cartilage helps you belt with no strain and greater range
•  Three ways to start your sound and how they influence your tone.
•  How the false folds help protect your voice from hoarseness
•  How the adam's apple (thyroid cartilage) can help you make a clearer tone
•  Three things that will make your voice sound deeper and richer
•  How to smooth out your break or “passagio”

Level II , Figure Combinations for Six Voice Qualities
, teaches you to combine the above anatomical elements to create six voice qualities and explores their use in Folk Music, Jazz, Pop, Early Music,  Musical Theater Opera, country music, gospel, Rhythm & Blues , Ethnic and Choral singing.  Understanding how the figures effect your sound  and power also allows you greater breadth of dynamic expression, and character development.

The workshop involves Powerpoint presentations, endoscopic videos, anatomical models and slides. There are application activities and small group practices. There is a chance for individual attention in a master class format at the end of the instruction day.   The workbooks provide a complete summary of the Estill Vocal Training model. You will also learn how to read a spectragram and how it can be used to provide you with continuing feedback on how well you are executing the Voice Qualities.

This course concentrates on the singing voice, valuable to singers, voice teachers and choir directors, but is applicable for actors, speech pathologists, and anyone interested in minimizing vocal strain and maximizing projection.

The venue, La Perla del Mar, is located one block from the beach on the California Central Coast. Come early or stay late to enjoy the beaches, wineries and Mission San Luis Obispo.

In Level Two, the sound effect "ingredients" discovered in Level One are mixed into "recipes" to produce voice qualities such as opera, belting, sob (a "crooning" quality), falsetto (as in the vibrato-less sound of some early music), twang (as in a role like Oklahoma's Ado Annie), and speech.  This course begins with a Level One review and then moves through discussion, training, and applications for each of the six voice qualities described about.  The advantages, limitations, and risks of each quality will be discussed, as well as appropriate application to repertoire. Course days provide a variety of learning environments: classroom presentations, practice sessions, and open coaching sessions, during which students may present pieces of their own choosing--ideally with problems to be solved. The principles of Estill Voice Training apply to beginning and advanced singers, voice teachers, voice therapists, choral conductors, and actors.  Estill Voice Training promotes both vocal versatility and vocal health. "BE (Before Estill) I used to ask my various teachers why I couldn't do certain things and never got a straight or useful answer. The first Estill workshop I attended in Australia was a revelation for me. I grieved for the voice I should have had for at least 12 months. .However, my main purpose now, is to pass on this wonderful work to as many people as I can. I am positive that Estill has answers!"
