In this course you will learn to differentiate and control the various vocal structures, or Figures, associated with pitch, range, color, intensity and, most importantly, sustained vocal health. The 6 Estill Voice Qualities -- Speech, Falsetto, Twang, Sob, Opera and Belt -- will also be utilized throughout the weekend so that each new Figure will not only be explored individually, but in the expanded context of each Quality. The result: a blend of part and whole, Figure and Quality, that will send you on your way to vocal mastery!

EVT is applicable to ALL styles of speaking and singing and this course is open to anyone interested in the wonders of the human voice including singers, actors, speech language pathologists and voice teachers. Participants will apply their new skills in group practice sessions as well as in individual coaching sessions. (Be sure to bring music and/or text!) After the tremendous success of the Level 1 & 2 courses in Jan 09 & 10, the course will once again be hosted by Waikato University in association with the New Zealand Opera School.

The course will be presented by Paul Farrington who has been the International Guest Tutor at the New Zealand Opera School since 2005, and is one of the most experienced and multi faceted presenters of Jo Estills work. Paul is currently Vocal Technique coach to the Young Artist Programme at the ROH Covent Garden, Goteborgs Operan Sweden, and also coach and advisor to some of the worlds foremost Opera and concert artists. He also coaches West End Musical and Contmeporary performers in the UK, Spain, Germany, Gran Canaria ,Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden, and for 17 years was also Clinical Vocal Consultant to the Universtiy Hospital Birmingham UK.

This day follows on from previous Breathing and Support workshops in response to many requests for further information on the physiology of breathing when singing.

The teaching of ‘support’ is still an area fraught with misunderstanding and misinformation. The key to effective teaching of this crucial area of vocal technique is clear understanding of the physiological basis for the need to ‘support’, what is being supported and the most efficient ways to achieve this.

Building on information given on earlier courses, we will identify which muscles are needed to support the voice by clarifying the relationship between breath and vocalisation. By using ultrasound techniques, we will also identify those muscles which undermine vocal support and those which are essential to sustained, vigorous voice use, in speaking or singing.

Using real time ultrasound, we will demonstrate which muscles tend to be overactive, overwhelming those which are necessary to efficient vocal function.

The day will conclude with a short masterclass, demonstrating the application of the day’s principles in the teaching studio.

The Complete 5 Day Course in the Estill Model presented by the UK’s most experienced and qualified team of Estill experts. This five day course will comprise Level 1 (12 Compulsory Figures) and Level 2 (6 Voice Qualities) and will also include a short introduction to anatomy & physiology and a vocal health session. Over three days, we focus on the complex Figure & Voice Quality combinations that are part and parcel of the professional performers’ artillery and which are found across genres; musical theatre, classical, rock and pop. Participants will therefore need a high level of independent control and understanding of both the Figures and Voice Qualities. We will address, among other subjects, the extension of qualities beyond their natural range, common quality combinations in different genres (including musical theatre and opera) as well as a special course dedicated to diction.

We will mostly work practically and integrate figures and qualities into music and also have time to focus on individual coaching/training.
